.While visiting the city of Târgu Mureș, you can't help but make a stop at the Zoo. Located in the eastern part of the city, this is the home of 500 animals, ready to beautify the day of any child, teenager, adult or pensioner. In just a few decades, the Zoo has benefited from an expansion of the area, enjoying today a double number in terms of hectares.
Currently, the zoo is one of the most visited centers. With a constant number of 500,000 visitors a year, it manages to gain the attention and attraction of even the most demanding tourists who step on its doorstep.
History and presentation
Located at an altitude of 488 meters in relation to the Black Sea and 197 meters from the city, the Zoo in Târgu Mureș opens its gates every year in front of 500,000 visitors. It is home to 500 animals and 80 species, covering an area of 40 hectares.
The first inauguration of the Zoo took place during 1964, taking place on an area of only 20 hectares. At that time, the location considered ideal was the forest in the Cornesti Plateau, which has remained until today. Currently, there are giraffes, Asian elephants and zebras, all with characteristics of 120 species.
Over time, thanks to investments in the Târgu Mureș Zoo, it has benefited from a semi-reservation allocated to bears and wolves. The reserve now covers an area of 5 hectares, in close proximity to that of European herbivores, of 10 hectares. In addition, a lake has been arranged, ideal for existing species.
Another highlight for the tourist attraction was the intention to build a cat pavilion. This decision was later put into practice, along with the erection of an African flag, capable of embodying and housing many animals. These include giraffes and elephants, as well as cats, in a separate pavilion.
